I was born and raised on a mixed farm in the Ridgedale area of Northeastern Saskatchewan Canada. I received a B.Sc in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan in 1976. I started farming in 1975 in partnership with my brother. The farm grew to over 17,000 acres producing a variety of seed crops, specialty component crops and as well as a number of traditional crops. The farm started to grow Hemp in 1998 and I started a small Hemp breeding program in 2001. In 2011, Meier Brothers Farms ceased operations when my brother retired.
I currently farm about 4,000 acres on a custom basis, raise leafcutter bees, and run a small bee export business and a plant breeding company that specializes in Industrial Hemp.
During my career I has been active in a number of farm related organizations that were dedicated to improving the viability of agriculture on the Canadian Prairies while at the same time improving the soil resource that we all depend upon for our livelihood. From January 1990 thru August of 1993, I served as the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation’s Regional Soil Conservation Specialist for Northeast Saskatchewan. In November of 1993, I along with my wife Bonnie and my brother Glen and his wife Shelley operating in partnership known as Meier Brothers Farm; were presented with the W.R. Motherwell award as one of Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers.
I have served on many local boards in a variety of capacities including chairman of the Canadian Canola Growers Association, the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers association and the Canadian Outstanding Young Farmers’ Alumni.
I joined Bourgault Industries as the company’s Agronomy Team Leader in February of 2006.
In 2008, I along with two partners incorporated Hemp Genetics International and a sister company Hemp Production Services in 2013.
